Prayer and the UK

July prayer concert 2016

This is not only a time to pray for Bognor – as we will do as we gather together next Tuesday (notice it’s the 5th July, not the 3rd!) at St. Mary Magdalene Church.  It is also a time to pray for the nation, and for the leaders, the government, and for families, for the cohesion of communities.

At a time when the devil would like to see community cohesion fall apart, and all the people in the land who would see good done, riven by opposing ideologies, the Holy Spirit is calling us to stand together, to look to Jesus, and to find the oil of unity.

As churches, if we have been honest with each other, we have probably looked at each other differently over the past few weeks: how can they think that? and still be a Christian?  How can you call yourself a follower of Jesus and vote in, OR vote out?!

The Referendum vote has exposed divisions that the last General Election vote did not expose.  For myself, I was one of those who was wrestling with both sides quite close to the vote.

What we know is that there is no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus!  And we know that we are also free to get it wrong.  This is an opportunity for mercy and grace to fall on this land, and to see forgiveness and love triumph over accusation, boasting, violence, abuse and hatred.  Let’s pray, as we prepare for the Prayer Concert next week, that the Lord will grow the fruit of the Spirit in us, the fruit of love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control.

You may like to use the World Prayer Centre adapted Lord’s Prayer that focuses on the immediate needs for our government, for the country and Europe in the aftermath of the Leave vote, in the lead-up to the Prayer Concert.  When you come on Tuesday, come ready to pray in the Spirit and to seek His will for the direction for our prayer.
